The decision applies to state agencies under the executive branch, as one-third of US states move to ban platforms on government devices. New Jersey is one of the few Democratic-led states to ban such platforms.
“The proactive and preventative measures we are taking today ensure the confidentiality, integrity and security of information assets under the control of the New Jersey government.” Murphy said in a statement.

Murphy’s directive allows certain “compelling state undertakings” for public interest reasons that use technology to demand exceptions.
Congress recently banned TikTok from most US government-issued devices, citing bipartisan security concerns and the spread of misinformation through the app.
TikTok is owned by Chinese company ByteDance, which moved its headquarters to Singapore in 2020. TikTok says it prioritizes the privacy and security of its community and is working to address security concerns raised by the United States.
“It is disappointing that so many states are jumping on the political bandwagon and doing nothing to advance their state’s cybersecurity and trying to enact policies based on unsubstantiated and false statements about TikTok.” spokesman Jamal Brown said in an email on Monday.
He added that the company will work with the federal government to “finalize a solution” to address the state’s security concerns.
